Final Stats

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The No. 7 Ohio State University men’s volleyball team (4-2) registered its third consecutive sweep, sending away the Flying Fleet of Erskine College (1-1) in three sets Saturday evening (25-19, 25-18, 25-17). Freshman setter Sanil Thomas guided the Buckeyes to a .429 team attacking percentage in his first career start, distributing 32 assists to six different teammates recording at least one kill. Ohio State never trailed at any point in any set.

Nicolas Szerszen paced all comers with 13 kills, picking up the baker’s dozen at a .478 (13-2-23) attacking rate. Christian Franceschi and Miles Johnson were each responsible for 8.5 points, combining for 14 kills, two aces and a pair of block assists. Blake Leeson was a significant factor as well, pounding home five kills on seven errorless swings and throwing up a team-high three block assists.

Thomas opened his debut as the starting setter by assisting on 13 of 15 OSU kills in the first set. He hooked up with Leeson to seize the first point and jumpstart an evening in which the Buckeyes never fell behind. Erskine was able to pull even at 4-4 before falling victim to a five-point spurt capped by back-to-back Franceschi aces surged Ohio State ahead for good at 9-4. The Buckeyes would leap forward by as many as eight points (16-8) and ultimately sealed the opening frame, 25-19.

Besting the Flying Fleet was a bit more cumbersome in set number two as Erskine mustered five tied scores compared to just a pair in the opening stanza. The latest stalemate came early, however, with the score locked up at 5-all. Ohio State slowly pulled away from there and entered intermission owners of a two-sets-to-none advantage following a 25-18 victory.

The Buckeyes left no doubt in the third frame, grabbing the first three tallies and maintaining the upper hand throughout. Ohio State stifled the Flying Fleet to an .069 hitting efficiency, powered by three Buckeye blocks. Leeson assisted on each of the rejections while fellow middle blocker, Matt Dorn, connected for three kills on four errorless swings as OSU closed the door, 25-17.
