COLUMBUS, Ohio– Three Ohio State men’s tennis players finished in the Top 6 of the Kentucky Winterslam 2001 tournament held at Lexington, Ky., Jan. 20-21. Vincent Ng (So., Broadview Heights, Ohio/University School), Brenton Contini (Fr., Dover, Ohio/Dover) and Ben Kirksey (Fr., Canton, Ohio/McKinley) captured second, third and sixth, respectively, at the tournament.
Ng defeated Todd Scheck of Kentucky in the semifinals, 6-3, 6-1, before falling to DePaul’s Jevgenji Cariov, 6-2, 6-4, in the finals. Over the past two weekends, Ng has captured one tournament championship (Big Ten Indoor, Jan. 13-15) and one runner-up. Ng finished the tournament with a 3-1 record.
Contini’s only loss in the tournament was to the eventual champion, Cariov, in the semifinals. Contini fell, 6-1, 6-1, but bounced back to defeat Scheck, 8-3, to claim third place in the tournament. Contini also finished the weekend event with a 3-1 mark.
Kirksey, after falling to Cariov in the quarterfinals, won his opening match in the fifth-eighth place bracket, 6-3, 6-3, over Karim Benmansour of Kentucky. In the match for fifth place, Ben Schmid of Morehead State defeated Kirksey, 6-0, 6-3. Kirksey finished in sixth place with a 2-2 record.
The Buckeye team will open its spring schedule with two matches at Jesse Owens West Recreational Center Thursday. OSU, No. 32 in the nation, will play host to Butler at 11 a.m. and Murray State at 5 p.m. The Buckeyes also will play host to the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame, the No. 33 team in the nation, at 1 p.m. Saturday.
