UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Buckeyes competed in the 46th annual Garret Open this past weekend at Penn State. The women’s squad competed on Saturday Nov. 4 and the men’s squad competed today. Members from both the men’s and women’s squad placed in the top 3.
Women’s Squad
On Saturday, the women had an impressive finish with Camilla Rivano placing first after defeating Notre Dame’s Morgan Partridge and Buckeye Gabriela Cecchini, placing third in women’s foil. Also competing for the women’s foil unit was Natalia Falkowski with six victories in the pool competition, placing 34th overall.
Emma Von Dadelszen and Alexanne Verret both placed in the top twenty for women’s epee. Emma Von Dadelszen had eight victories and Alexanne Verret had ten in the pool competition. Gabriella Leccese and Eva Petronchak placed in the top 50.
Several Buckeyes including Sarah Merza, Areil Gluck, Aleksandra Kolmykova, Nicole Fisher, and Stephanie Miller, placed in the top 50 for women’s sabre.
Men’s Squad
The men rounded out the competition on Sunday with two fencers placing in the top twenty in men’s foil. James Hu placed 13th with nine pool victories and Liam Smith placed 20th with seven victories. Four other Buckeyes placed in the top 50 in this category, including Jacob Gordon, William Gaziano, Nathan Wriedt, and Leon Cao.
John Culpepper ended the day with an impressive third place finish, defeating Notre Dame’s Dylan French in men’s epee. Henry Lange finished close behind with an eighth-place finish. Several other Buckeyes including Oliver Shindler, Ethan Edwards, Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Kaiden Crotchett, and Sean Lauron all placed in the top 50.
For Men’s Sabre, Domenik Koch placed sixth, defeating Yale fencer, Kevin Callahan. Roscoe Swartz, Frank Ditullio, Shanvanth Arnipalli, and Calvin Ong finished in the top 50.
What’s Next
The Buckeyes are set to host the Elite Invitational Duals the weekend of November 17 and 18 at French Field House. This will be the Buckeyes third competition of the 2018-2019 season.
