COLUMBUS, Ohio – Head coach Tom Ryan routinely preaches this Ohio State wrestling program is about building life champions. Although the standard of success is often measured by wins and losses, Ryan and his coaching staff can be found advocating for the total student-athlete as well. That is why it comes as no surprise three Buckeyes in C.J. Magrum, Corey Morrison and Colt Sponseller were named to the 2010 NWCA All-Academic Team Wednesday.

“We are all proud of the men in this wrestling program and our academic All-Americans,” Ryan said. “The total student-athlete culture runs through the entire Ohio State Athletics Department.”
With three selections, Ohio State was tied for the second-most honorees with American, Purdue and Utah Valley. Edinboro, Nebraska, and UT-Chattanooga led the field as each had four recipients. In order to be eligible for NWCA All-Academic honors, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average and either qualified for the NCAA championships or won 60 percent of his matches, while competing in 60 percent of the team’s schedule. Student-athletes also can qualify by earning a cumulative 3.0 GPA and securing All-America laurels.

As a sophomore exploration major, Magrum qualified for the NCAA championships at 197 pounds. An Academic All-Big Ten and Ohio State Scholar-Athlete, this is the Oak Harbor, Ohio, native’s first All-Academic honor.

Already owning a bachelor’s degree in mathematics (June 2009), Morrison is currently a graduate student studying education. He qualified for his second-consecutive NCAA championships this past season in the heavyweight division. Hailing from Shaker Heights, Ohio, Morrison is a two-time NWCA All-Academic honoree. He also is four-time Academic All-Big Ten and three-time Ohio State Scholar-Athlete recipient.

The 2010 Big Ten Championships runner-up at 165 pounds, Sponseller is a marketing major from Glenmont, Ohio. After being named to the inaugural NWCA Freshman All-Academic Team in 2008, Sponseller has earned his first All-Academic honor. Sponseller also is an Academic All-Big Ten and Ohio State Scholar-Athlete honoree.
