Three Buckeyes Earn Automatic NCAA Championship Bids

CLEVELAND, Ohio – At the NCAA Midwest Regional, Ohio State fencers competed for a final chance to earn national championship bids. Maximilien Chastanet, Domenik Koch, and Lewis Weiss all earned automatic qualification for the championships after finishing first in their weapon categories.

Chastanet defended his foil title, his third title in four years, to solidify a spot at the championships. He finished the day undefeated against six opponents and a +11 indicator. Stas Sudilovsky finished in fourth with three victories and a +1 indicator with teammate Julien Baneux following with three victories to take fifth place.

Gabriela Cecchini finished in third place with 11 victories and a +36 indicator while Camilla Rivano earned 10 victories and a +24 indicator to take fifth place.

Domenik Koch took home the men’s sabre title with 8 victories and a +29 indicator. This will be his second championship appearance in as many years. Hector Florencia’s third place finish was a result of defeating seven opponents, earning a +16 indicator. This is his highest finish at the event. Frederik Koch finished close behind Florencia in fourth, with seven victories and a +14 indicator.

Maddalena Bosetti finished in third place with eight wins and a +19. Sarah Merza defeated six opponents, earning a +10 indicator, to take seventh.

Alexanne Verret and Emma von Dadelszen finished in second and third respectively. Verret finished with 10 victories and a +26 indicator while von Dadelszen defeated 10 opponents and earned a +20 indicator.

The men swept the competition with Weiss, Oliver Shindler, and Marc-Antoine Blais Belanger finishing first, second, and third. Weiss finished with seven victories and a +17 indicator to earn his fourth straight epee title. Shindler earned six victories and +8 indicator while Blais Belanger defeated five opponents and finished with a +15 indicator.

Selections to the national championships will be announced on Tuesday, Mar. 13. The Buckeyes will then head to State College, Pa. for the 2018 NCAA Championships hosted by Penn State on Mar. 22-25.
