The Buckeyes Earn Sixth Overall at the 2019 NCAA Championships

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Ohio State placed sixth overall today at the 2019 NCAA Championships and five Buckeyes took home All-American accolades. The team accumulated a total of 120 points throughout the duration of the competition. The men’s squad earned 69 victories, and the women picked up 51 to put the Buckeyes in sixth.

WOMEN’S EPEE

Sophomore Alexanne Verret went 6-4 on the day, walking away with 10 victories and a +2 indicator. This was Verret’s second appearance at the NCAA Championships. She finished 16th overall in 2018.

WOMEN’S FOIL

The foil unit contributed 27 points to the Buckeyes team total. Gabriela Cecchini won 12 bouts, placing ninth overall. Cecchini had 88 winning touches and ended with a +9 indicator. Fellow teammate, Camilla Rivano, earned two victories today and ended the competition with a combined 15 wins to secure herself a sixth-place finish. Rivano scored a cumulative 85 touches with a +16 indicator.

WOMEN’S SABRE

Sarah Merza placed seventh overall in her third NCAA Championship with a total of fourteen victories. She added three wins to the 11 she earned yesterday to give the Buckeyes 14 squad points. Merza closed out the competition with a +10 indicator and 88 winning touches.

ALL-AMERICANS

The Buckeyes ended the competition with five All-Americans. Oliver Shindler and Domenik Koch earned first team All-American honors for their first and third-place finishes at the NCAA Championships. Camilla Rivano and Sarah Merza both earned second team All-American accolades and Gabriela Cecchini was selected for honorable mention.

MEN’S RECAP

The men’s squad contributed 69 points to the team’s total of 120 points. 28 points were earned by both the epee and the sabre units. The foil unit picked up 13 victories, placing the Buckeyes in fifth at the conclusion of the first two days. Two Buckeyes from the men’s squad finished in the top-three. Domenik Koch earned bronze and Oliver Shindler brought home the gold.
