The 1978 Ohio State men’s volleyball team earned a shot at ‘Best of the Buckeyes’ glory as one of seven teams entered into the competition.
With a 32-3 record (.914), the 1978 Buckeyes are seeded 4th and will go up against a group of familiar faces in the 1977 Buckeyes on Tuesday, May 5 in the quarterfinals (see bracket below). Aldis Berzins was named the MIVA Player of the Year for both seasons.
🏆 TROPHY CHASING
The 1978 Buckeyes stormed through an undefeated conference slate to claim the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association crown and qualify for the NCAA Championships. The regular season included just two setbacks, both going the distance in five sets. Ohio State fell in another heartbreaking fifth set to Pepperdine in the NCAA Semifinals before rebounding quickly to take third place with a sweep over Rutgers-Newark. Aldis Berzins was named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team.
Nearly 30 years later, Andy Dumpis joined his ’78 teammate Berzins in the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame (Class of 2007).
