COLUMBUS, Ohio – The NCAA Men’s and Women’s Fencing Committee has announced the field of competitors who will participate in the 2019 National Collegiate Men’s and Women’s Fencing Championships. Ten Buckeyes have been selected to compete against the top collegiate fencers in the nation. All weapon categories will be represented by Ohio State.
A grand total of 144 fencers were selected to compete in the individual event. The fencers will compete in a round-robin format and the top four finishers in each of the six weapon categories will have the opportunity to compete in the semifinals. Winning fencers will compete for first and second places and those who do not advance, will be awarded a tie for third place.
The event will be hosted by Cleveland State and the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission on Mar. 21-24 at the Wolstein Center in Cleveland, Ohio.
Oliver Shindler, Jack Bradford, Leon Cao, Nathan Wriedt and Roscoe Swartz will all be making their first appearance on the NCAA Championship strips. Domenik Koch is making his third appearance for the Buckeyes.
For the women, Alexanne Verret, Gabriela Cecchini and Camilla Rivano are all returning for a second year to compete. This is Sarah Merza’s third appearance at this event.
A live feed of the semifinal and final bouts will be available on ESPN3 or on the WatchESPN app. The semifinals, finals and event highlights will air on ESPNU at 2:30 p.m. ET on April 3.
