COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State redshirt freshman quarterback Tate Martell is the Big Ten Conference’s co-freshman of the week for his offensive efforts in Ohio State’s 52-3 win over Rutgers Saturday at Ohio Stadium.
Martell, from Las Vegas and Bishop Gorman High School, was 10 of 10 passing against the Scarlet Knights for the best completion percentage performance in school history, topping Bill Mrukowski’s 10 of 11 game against UCLA in 1961. (Minimum: 10 completions). Starter Dwayne Haskins’ 20 completions in 23 attempts was the third-best game, percentage-wise, in school history.
Martell threw for 121 yards and his first touchdown pass as a collegian – 51 yards to Terry McLaurin – in the Rutgers game. He also scored his first touchdown on a multi-cutback run of 47 yards in the fourth quarter. He finished with a team high 95 rushing yards and 216 yards of total offense.
No. 4 Ohio State travels to North Dallas, Texas, this weekend for an 8 p.m. game Sunday against No. 15 TCU at AT&T Stadium. ABC will televise the game to a national, primetime audience.
