The Ohio State synchronized swimming team welcomes Michigan to the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion on Saturday when it hosts its annual Zero Waste Meet. The event will feature a technical competition beginning at 10 a.m. and a routine competition with solos, duets and trios beginning at 2 p.m. This is the season opener for the Buckeyes as they look to defend their 2019 national championship title.

This is the fourth time the Buckeyes have hosted the Zero Waste Invitational, which is another step in a sustainable direction for the University as it aims to achieve zero waste by 2025. The synchronized swimming program joined the movement and adopted the initiative in 2017. With the support of sustainability professionals and excitement from the team, the Buckeyes are excited to make all 2020 home events meet the zero waste standard.

The team has worked closely with Cassidy Jenney, a sustainability associate in the Office of Athletics and Business Advancement. Jenney says the 2020 ‘Be the Change’ initiative aligns extremely well with the University’s overall goals and she is excited about the responsibility the team feels.

“The Zero Waste Invitational is an important step towards the University’s sustainability goal of becoming zero waste by 2025,” Jenney said. “This means, we’re looking to divert over 90% of waste away from the landfill to create a cleaner community where we live and play. The synchronized swimming team at Ohio State is using its platform in sports to inspire fans and other teams in the Department of Athletics to help lead the way in becoming environmentally conscious.”

Zero waste goes hand-in-hand with the team themes announced in October – mental health and sustainability. Both initiatives will guide the Scarlet and Gray teams this year as they compete across the country. Read more about the ‘Break the Stigma – Be the Change’ initiative HERE.
