COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State synchronized swimming team tallied 93 points to win the Jessica Beck Memorial Meet Saturday in the Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. The Buckeyes won three of four routines in the event that honored former OSU synchronized swimmer Jessica Beck, who died in 2005 in what would have been her senior year.
The Scarlet and Gray topped the solo, trio and team events, posting scores of 14, 30 and 34, respectively. Ohio State finished second in duet with 15 points.
Overall, William & Mary was second with 73 points, followed by Miami (50) and Ohio (42).
The meet started with the trio routine and the combination of Ellen Hacker (Sr., Newark, Ohio/Columbus Coralinas), Carmen Moraes (So., Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/Tyvca Tenis Clube) and Caitlin Stewart (Fr., Huntington Beach, Calif./Riverside Aquettes) notched a 93.500 to finish first. Classmates Barbara Nesbitt (Fr., Riverside, Calif./U.S. National Team), Leah Pinette (Jr., Bristol, Conn./New Canaan Aquianas) and Hannah Shively (Fr., Westerville, Ohio/Riverside Aquettes) were second, scoring a 91.333.
The duo of Hacker and Stewart were the lone OSU competitors in the duet, but they took the top spot with a 91.833. In an exhibition routine, Buckeyes Jackie Mundy (Fr., Corona, Calif./Riverside Aquettes) and Brooke Paul (Jr., Columbus, Ohio/Columbus Coralinas) compiled an 87.667.
Nesbitt outpaced her nearest competitor by more than 10 points to win the solo competition with a 95.000.
The Buckeyes performed their first team routines of the year to wrap up the meet. The Scarlet team of Michelle Benzie (Jr., El Cajon, Calif./Sweetwater Dolphins), Jayme DeLancy (So., Hamden, Conn./New Canaan Aquianas), Hacker, Moraes, Nesbitt, Pinette, Shively and Stewart were first, scoring a 95.500.
Kaitlin Bolt (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio/Riverside Aquettes), Erin DeMarco (Jr., Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs Aquacades), Liz Derr (Fr., St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Stars), Rita Gillan (Fr., Andover, Mass./ANA YMCA), Mundy, Paul, Emilie Siemer (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio/Cincinnati Synchrogators) and Kendra Sollars (So., Scottsdale, Ariz./Arizona Aqua Stars) made up the Gray team that finished second with 91.167 points.
Ohio State will travel to Richmond, Va., Feb. 10 to compete against Richmond. The Buckeyes then will remain in the state of Virginia to take on William & Mary Feb. 11 in Williamsburg, Va.
