COLUMBUS, Ohio – Two Ohio State newcomers are set to compete this week at the US Amateur at the Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Bandon, Ore. Incoming freshman Maxwell Moldovan and graduate transfer Elis Svard have both been selected to compete this week on the Dunes and Trails courses.
Due to health concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 254-player field was made of entirely exempt players based on a variety of categories. There was no open qualifying this year. With Moldovan and Svard, Ohio State is one of just two schools in the Big Ten with multiple players in the field.
For Moldovan, who was the 2019 AJGA Player of the Year, this is the cap to a tremendous summer of golf. He has played in just about every top amateur event and has played quite well. He rose to as high as No. 33 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings and led the US side to a victory in Junior President’s Cup in Australia this past December. Last summer, Moldovan advanced to the Round of 32 in the U.S. Amateur and the Round of 16 in the U.S. Junior Amateur.
Svard had a great collegiate career at Cal State Monterey Bay. A three-time All-American, he won four times and posted 20 top-5 finishes. This past year, he was a finalist for the DII Jack Nicklaus Award after finishing in the top-10 in all six of his collegiate tournaments. The Sweden native recently won the Stockholm Amateur where he fired rounds of 68-66-66.
Two stroke play rounds on Monday and Tuesday will advance the top-64 players to match play starting on Wednesday. A champion will be crowned following the 36-hole final match on Sunday. GOLF Channel and NBCUniversal’s new streaming service Peacock are combining for five days of live tournament coverage beginning on Wednesday.
