Sundays in the Shoe: Chris Olsgard

There was a large crowd at Ohio Stadium last weekend, and it had nothing to do with football. Over 150 student-athletes packed the Huntington Club on Sunday night to hear from Chris Olsgard, a former captain of the men’s hockey team and currently partner at Waller Financial Group. Oslgard shared financial planning advice with the audience as part of the Sundays in The Shoe series, which occurs on the first Sunday of every month.

Olsgard, who played for the Buckeyes from 2001-04, part of two NCAA team appearances and the 2004 CCHA Tournament Championship, told his story about his post-hockey career and discovering his path in financial planning. He currently helps with Waller’s strategic planning, client relationships and serves on its investment committee. He shared with the audience advice and expertise on, among other things, personal financial growth and individual investment strategies. His key takeaways:

• Start early. The biggest asset that student-athletes have as they begin to invest is time.
• Avoid debt.
• Invest in yourself. Be sure that you are putting aside enough money to “pay yourself” each month.
• Maximize your value. No matter what you’re asked to do, make yourself indispensable to whoever you’re working for.
• As student-athletes, you already have a leg up on your competition in the work place because of the skills you learn on a team and in high stress situations.
