Summer Internships: Lukas Buckley

Lukas Buckley, a finance major and two-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, is over 3,000 miles from his hometown of Walpole, Mass. this summer while he’s interning with Nike in Beaverton, Oregon. He was drawn to the internship, in part, to help him “grow up and develop as a young professional.”

Buckley’s initial interest in the internship went far beyond the practical things he could learn as a member of the global brand planning department. “I think one of the best ways you can continue to grow as a person and develop as a working professional is to push yourself outside your comfort zone.  Beaverton, Oregon is exactly that for me,” he said.

Outside of opportunity to live and work in a different part of the country this summer, Buckley said he’s also eager to learn how big business operates. “This has given me an opportunity to be a sponge, learning as much as I can about the processes and procedures that underly this business,” he said. “Nike has such a powerful hand in sports, which are very important to me, so it was hard to pass up an opportunity where my love for sports and career ambitions could intersect like they do here.”

What’s the most important thing that Buckley has learned at the world’s largest manufacturer of athletic shoes, apparel and other sports equipment? “At the end of the day, the professional world doesn’t have to be so tense and monotonous. Nike encourages a very laid back working environment and allows its employees the freedom to decide how to format and structure their days, as long as their work is done at the end of the day.”

While his daily work may not directly involve finance and financial decisions, Buckley says the work that he’s done reinforces his desire to pursue a career in that field. “We do a lot of budgeting processes and through these actions I have found that I really enjoy the math and thought process behind money works within and for a company.”
