COLUMBUS, Ohio–Three Buckeyes were recognized Wednesday by the National Association of Basketball Coaches for accomplishments during the 2010-11 regular season.
Freshman Jared Sullinger, a 2011 First Team All-Big Ten selection and the league’s freshman of the year, was selected to the NABC District 7 First Team. He led the Buckeyes in scoring with 17.3 points a game and was the squad’s top rebounder with 9.7 a contest. Over 17 weeks during the regular season, Sullinger was named the Big Ten freshman of the week 12 times.
Junior William Buford and senior David Lighty were NABC Disctict 7 second team honorees. Buford, a second team All-Big Ten selection in 2011, averaged 14.5 points a game while connecting on 48 percent of his field goal attempts (167-348). He added 94 assists and 25 steals for the 29-2 Buckeyes.
Lighty, also second team All-Big Ten selection this year, averaged 12.3 points with 104 assists and 52 steals. He is Ohio State’s all-time leader in wins with 124 and is a finalist for the 2011 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award. Fans can vote for Lighty at http://go.osu.edu/VOTE4LIGHTY.
The Buckeyes travel to Indianapolis this week for the 2011 Big Ten Tournament. Ohio State, the No. 1 seed, opens with the winner of the No. 8 Northwestern vs. No. 9 Minnesota game Thursday. The Buckeyes play at noon Friday (ESPN).
