COLUMBUS, Ohio – The old saying is “It’s not how you start, but how you finish.” That was the story of the day for Ohio State in the opening round of the NCAA Columbus Regional at the OSU Golf Club.
A slow start had the Buckeyes looking up at the field, but 10 birdies in the final five holes lifted the team into a tie for fifth at 6-over par. The Top 5 teams after Wednesday’s final round will advance to the NCAA Championship in Scottsdale, Ariz., later this month.
The Buckeyes posted scores of 71-75 on Monday. Adam Wallin had the most consistent round as he made 11 consecutive pars to open his round and then posted one bogey and one birdie the rest of the way to card a 71.
Jackson Chandler made four consecutive birdies coming home and would finish with a 1-over 72. JonErik Alford closed with a birdie on the par-3 eighth and another on the par-4 ninth to post a 2-over 73. Maxwell Moldovan also birdied his final hole of the day, the par-4 ninth, to finish with a 74. Patrick Schmucking was 6-over par through six holes and finished with two birdies in his final three holes to card a 75.
Ohio State will start the second round in the first wave off the 10th tee beginning at 8 a.m. Admission is free for the event.
