Strom Guides Buckeyes to 1st Under Par Round as Head Coach

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Buckeyes shot 1-under 287 in the second round of the Mason Rudolph Championship Saturday for the first under par round of the season and the first for Lisa Strom as head coach of the Buckeyes. The accomplishment comes in the second tournament of her Ohio State head coaching career.

Ohio State sits in the No. 8(t) spot after Day 2 at the event. The three-day tournament at the Vanderbilt Legends Club – North Course in Franklin, Tennessee, concludes with 18 holes Sunday.

Freshman Faith Choi improved by 10 strokes over her first-round score by carding a 69 (-3) in Round 2 Saturday. She is currently +4 after two rounds and improved 34 spots, the biggest individual improvement over Day 1 of the 81 players, to enter Sunday tied for 42nd.

Junior Aneka Seumanutafa birdied the final two holes Saturday to shoot 70 (-2) and remain under par for the tournament through two rounds at -3 (71-70=141). She enters the final day tied for the No. 8 spot individually.

Redshirt freshman Jillian Bourdage also has put together a pair of consistent rounds. She carded a 73 (+1) Saturday. She enters Sunday at even par (71-73=144).

The Buckeyes shot 293 (+5) Friday behind a pair of 71s (-1) from Seumanutafa and Bourdage.

  • Ohio State’s lineup this week is made up of Aneka Seumanutafa, Jillian Bourdage, Kristin Jamieson, Faith Choi and Lauren Peter. Kailie Vongsaga is competing as an individual. She shot 73 (+1) Saturday after a Friday score of 79. She is tied for 65th individually with 18 to play.
  • The University of Oregon is leading after Day 2 at -17 (276-283=559).
  • The Buckeyes are participating in the Folds of Honor program this year to honor military heros lost or wounded in action. Each week a member of the Buckeyes will carry a bag that will be auctioned after the spring season to benefit the Folds of Honor program. This week Aneka Seumanutafa will carry the designated golf bag for her leadership and work in the weight room. The player carrying the bag each week will be indicated by (FOH) on the pretournament lineup graphic.
  • Ohio State last won the Mason Rudolph in 2001 (-3).
  • The Buckeyes opened the fall season at the Wolverine Invitational Sept. 13-14. Ohio State finished tied for the No. 9 spot with Seumanutafa leading the way at +3 and tied for eighth individually.
  • This week is the second of four fall events. The Buckeyes host the Barbara Nicklaus Cup (Oct. 4-5 at Muirfield Village GC) and finish at the Tar Heel Invitational (UNC/Oct. 15-17).
  • The Spring portion of the schedule gets underway with Big Ten Match Play (Jan. 31-Feb. 1) in Palm Harbor Florida.
  • The weather forecast for the Mason Rudolph Championship calls for mainly sunny skies with temperatures in the mid-70s each day.
