COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State men’s gymnastics sophomore Danny Steiner qualified for the 2013 U.S. Championships after finishing ninth overall at the 2013 U.S. Men’s National Qualifier Saturday night at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. The men’s qualifier was the last opportunity for the top male gymnasts in the country to qualify for the U.S. Championships held August 15-18 in Hartford, Conn.

Steiner, a two-time All-American, competed in the all-around for the first time in his collegiate career scoring a 15.05 on floor exercise and a 14.15 on high bar to finish second and 10th, respectively. The Mesa, Ariz., native tallied a score of 81.85 on all six events to place ninth overall and earn 30 points based on the National Points Ranking System to advance to his first career U.S. National Championships.

Five other Buckeyes participated at the National Qualifier as sophomores Drew Moling and Alex Nork, redshirt sophomore Jeff Treleaven and incoming freshmen Sean Melton and Andrew Rickly all took part in the competition.

Moling also competed in the all-around for the first time in his collegiate career, placing 20th overall and earning 12 points towards qualification. Moling posted a Top 10 finish on vault after scoring a 14.65 on the event. Nork competed on four events, earning a fifth-place finish on parallel bars with a 14.15, while Treleaven competed on two events, placing 10th on floor exercise with a 14.45.

Melton, a member of the U.S. Senior Men’s National Team, competed on three events at the Qualifier. The Orlando, Fla., native placed fifth on pommel horse with a 14.50 and seventh on parallel bars with a 13.90. Rickly competed in the Junior Division, placing third overall in the all-around with a 130.35, having scored a 79.40 on day one of competition and a 50.95 on day two. The Lewis Center, Ohio, native advanced to compete in the Junior Division at the U.S. National Championships.

Steiner and Rickly will be joined by Melton, incoming freshman Jacob Dastrup, redshirt junior Michael Newburger and former Buckeye Brandon Wynn at the 2013 U.S Championships. Dastrup qualified to compete after finishing third in the all-around at the 2013 Junior Olympic National Championships, while Newburger earned an automatic bid after claiming the 2013 NCAA Pommel Horse Championship. Melton and Wynn automatically qualify as members of the U.S. Senior Men’s National Team.
