Ohio native and former Indiana standout Matt Foldesy has been named assistant coach of the Ohio State men’s soccer team, head coach Brian Maisonneuve announced Monday, May 14. Foldesy, from North Olmsted, Ohio, comes back to his home state after spending a year as a graduate assistant at Lewis University. Foldesy played two seasons at Indiana University under Maisonneuve, advancing to the NCAA Tournament in 2014 and 2015.
“I’m really excited to have Matt on staff and the guys are going to love working with him,” Maisonneuve said. “Matt was a fantastic youth player coming out of Cleveland and had a good career at Akron and Indiana. I had the pleasure of working with Matt and really enjoyed the way he saw the game. He has a fantastic soccer brain. Above all though, Matt has a good personality and is a great person for our student-athletes to learn from. I couldn’t be happier to have Matt on staff.”
Foldesy will be the recruiting coordinator for the Scarlet and Gray. He spent one year as a graduate assistant at Lewis University and helped guide the Flyers to a 12-4-2 record in 2017. Four members earned GLVC all-conference and all-Midwest region honors by the United Soccer Coaches Association.
“I’m very excited to be joining Brian Maisonneuve and the staff at Ohio State,” Foldesy said. “It’s a great feeling heading back to my home state. John Bluem did a great job of building the program and I look forward to continuing that success.”
During his collegiate days, Foldesy played two seasons for the Hoosiers in 2014-15, starting in a combined 43 matches. He scored two goals and had four assists as a junior, leading Indiana to the Big Ten Tournament final and the second round of the NCAA Tournament. In 2015, Foldesy was named a team captain and Academic All-Big Ten selection. He started in all 21 matches and scored two goals with one assist. The Hoosiers advanced to the Big Ten Tournament final for the second straight year and made an NCAA Sweet 16 appearance.
Prior to his time in Bloomington, Foldesy spent two years at the University of Akron, starting in 11 matches for the Zips, who won back-to-back MAC tournament titles and advanced to two NCAA Tournaments, including the round of 16 in 2012. Foldesy went to St. Ignatius High School, scoring 42 goals, including 16 game-winners, with 31 assists in two seasons. He guided the Wildcats to a national title as a junior with a 23-0 record and won back-to-back state titles in 2010-11 with a 45-1 overall record.
Foldesy, who resides in Columbus, earned his undergraduate degree in public affairs management from Indiana in 2016.
