Doug Calland, a member of the Ohio State athletic training staff since 1995, serves as head athletic trainer for the Buckeyes and is in charge of overseeing the football program and all aspects of athletic training in the Ohio State athletics department. He helped oversee the finishing touches of the athletic training center in the $19 million renovation to the WHAC.

Calland, from Columbus, is a graduate of Whetstone High School. He graduated from Ohio State in 1981 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education and a minor in health education. As an undergraduate, he spent four years on the athletic training staff working with a variety of sports, including football.

Prior to his graduation from OSU, Calland served as the head athletic trainer for the Pittsburgh Pirates Rookie League team in Bradenton, Fla.

Following his graduation from Ohio State, Calland was a graduate assistant athletic trainer for two years at Oklahoma State University. While there, he worked with the wrestling program and assisted with football. He earned his master’s degree in educational administration from Oklahoma State in 1983.

Immediately after graduation, Calland joined the athletic training staff at the University of Washington, where he spent 11 years working primarily with football and men’s basketball. In 1994, he was promoted to assistant head athletic trainer. While he was at Washington, the Huskies played in three Rose Bowls and captured the 1991 national championship.

Calland returned to Ohio State in 1995 to work with the football team. He has had oversight of the football program since 2000, was named co-head athletic trainer in 2005 and named head athletic trainer in 2007. During the 2007 season, he was the first non-player to receive the Jim Parker hit of the week award, for the Purdue game.

Calland is a member National Athletic Trainers Association and the Ohio Athletic Trainers Association. He serves on the NATA’s National Honors and Awards Committee. He also serves on the NFL/Collegiate Athletic Trainer Committee.

In addition to his duties with athletics, Calland is a clinical course instructor in Ohio State’s school of Allied Medical Professions.

Doug has three children: Alyssa, Brandon and Ryan.
