COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Big Ten Conference has named Ohio State forward Mariana Solorzano (Fr., Caracas, Venezuela) as its offensive player of the week for field hockey. The freshman helped lead the Buckeyes to a 2-0 start by tallying the game-winning goals in both contests.
“When we recruited Mariana, we knew right away that she had the talent to become an impact player,” head coach Anne Wilkinson said. “This a great start to her career and hopefully just the beginning of good things to come.”
On Saturday, against Miami (Ohio), she broke a scoreless tie with 2:46 remaining in the first half to help lift the Buckeyes to a 2-1 victory over the Redhawks. On Sunday, Solorzano picked up where she left off, scoring the first and game-winning goal just four minutes into the contest. In the second half, she scored again to record the first multiple-goal game of her young career. OSU eventually won the game 6-0.
Solorzano (pronounced: Solar-zhan-o) is currently tied for the Big Ten lead with three goals and six points.
