Columbus, Ohio – The Ohio State Buckeyes (20-29 overall, 5-16 in Big Ten) closed out the home portion of their 1999 schedule with a 7-2 win over Youngstown State (11-37). The highlight of the game was Stacy Roth (Fr., Wauseon, Ohio) setting a new school record for runs batted in by a freshman.

The two schools played scoreless softball for the first four innings. In the top of the fifth, YSU scored a pair of runs off a pair of hits and two Ohio State errors.

But the Buckeyes responded in the bottom of the fifth. Carrie Vanderpool (Sr., Corona, Calif.) led off with a single to centerfield. After stealing second base and a Cheryl Palaron (Sr., Reno, Nev.) walk, the table was set for Roth’s record setting at bat. Off a 1-1 offering by YSU starting pitcher Melanie Pangallo, Roth doubled to rightfield to clear the bases and give her RBI’s 29 and 30 for the season. The old OSU freshman record of 28 was held by Amy Haug (1996). Roth eventually scored on a Jaime Chenevey (Sr., Wooster, Ohio) double down the leftfield line. The Buckeyes closed the inning with a 3-2 lead.

The OSU bats stayed alive in the sixth inning. With one out, Holly English (So., Akron, Ohio) singled to centerfield. She advanced to second on a ground out by Vanderpool. This brought up Natalie Kratzer (Sr., Ashland, Ohio) to the plate. In her final home at bat of her college career, she ripped a her first career triple to the alley in left-centerfield to score English. Palaraon then decided to follow Kratzer’s lead and in her final home at bat. She too triple, this one a liner to centerfield to score Kratzer. The Buckeyes added two more runs in the inning to take the 7-2 win.

“It was a nice way to end my home career,” Kratzer said. “I’m glad this senior class can leave here on a solid win.”

Inside the circle, Jenn Elwell (Fr., Dearborn Heights, Mich.) pitched a complete game to improve her record to 3-2. YSU’s Pangallo (3-13) took the loss. The Buckeyes will finish the 1999 season in Minneapolis, Minn. They begin a three-game series on Saturday against the Minnesota Golden Gophers.
