COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State Buckeyes lost to No. 15 Iowa Hawkeyes today, 10-2, at Pearl Field. Renae Weigel notched her 13th home run in her career to move to first place on the OSU all-time HR list, but it was not enough as the Buckeyes fell to 20-23 for the season and 4-10 in the Big Ten. Iowa sits in first place in the conference standings with a 38-11 overall and 12-3 in the Big Ten.
Weigel opened the second inning with a blast over the leftfield wall off Kelly Zeilstra for her OSU record 13th career home run. The Hawkeyes bounced back in the bottom of the inning, notching a run off a Jill Knopf single to centerfield.
Iowa gained the momentum, posting five runs off six hits in the bottom of the third. Lisa Rashe led the Hawkeyes, going 2-for-3 with two hits and two runs batted in.
Ohio State would add another run as Anna Smith scored on a Hawkeye error, but the Buckeyes’ pitchers were rattled as Iowa posted 10 hits in the game for the 10-2 win.
Toni Hileman went 2.1 innings, giving up six runs off eight hits. Kristi Martin, who relieved Hileman in the second, pitched three innings, giving up four runs and striking out one.
Ohio State will finish the two-game series on Sunday at Pearl Field beginning at 1 p.m.
