Columbus, Ohio – The Ohio State Buckeyes (18-29, 4-17 in Big Ten) split a doubleheader with Northwestern (26-29, 7-11 in Big Ten) at Buckeye Field. The Buckeyes won game one 8-4, but would lose the second game, 10-3.
%^$In game one, Northwestern got on the board early, with two runs off Ohio State starter Toni Hileman (Jr., Alliance, Ohio). Northwestern’s Erin Jancic singled to centerfield to bring home Lindsey Prezell and Gretchan Barnes.%^$ %^$Hileman not only settled in and pitched three scoreless innings, but also helped the Buckeyes rally back in the fourth inning. After Renee Wiegel (Jr., Coldwater, Ohio) walked, Samantha Kimara (Fr., Placentia, Calif.) followed with a single to rightfield. Both players would advance off a pass ball and then score for the Buckeyes as Hileman doubled to left field.
%^$Heading into the fifth inning with the score tied, Northwestern’s Mikie Chambers singled and advanced to second off a Tami Jones’ sacrifice bunt. She would score on a Barnes’ single.
%^$Ohio State followed with a pair of runs to take their first lead of the game. Cheryl Palaroan (Sr., Reno, Nev.) belted a single to centerfield and Stacy Roth (Fr., Wauseon, Ohio) doubled and moved Paloroan to third. Jaime Chenevey (Sr., Wooster, Ohio) immediately sliced a double down the rightfield line to score Smith and Palaroan.
%^$The Buckeyes added four more runs in the sixth. Carrie Vanderpool (Sr., Corona, Calif.) led off with a single and advanced to second off a fielder’s choice from teammate Anna Smith (Fr., Walnut, Calif.). Palaroan dropped a perfect bunt to load the bases. With only one out, Chenevey walked, bringing home Vanderpool. Kimura singled to rightfield to score Chenevey and Palaroan.
%^$Northwestern notched another run in the top of the seventh, but the Buckeyes took the first game, 8-4.
%^$Hileman captured the win for the Buckeyes to improve her record to 7-19. Hileman went six innings and held the Wildcats to only four runs. Brooke Siebel (18-18) took the loss for OSU.
%^$The Wildcats came back in the second game to split the doubleheader. Northwestern again scored first with lead off hitter Jones blasting a solo home run off starter Meaghan Robinson (Sr., Naples, Fla.). Ohio State answered back with a Weigel walk, who moved to third after Wessendorf doubled to centerfield. Holly English (So., Akron, Ohio) followed with a single to rightfield to bring Weigel home.
%^$Northwestern boosted its lead in the bottom of the fourth and fifth with seven runs.
%^$Ohio State tried to make a run in the fourth and fifth innings off several Northwestern errors, but only notched two runs. Weigel singled to left field and advanced to second off a wild pitch. Kimura singled and then Weigel scored off an error by right fielder Prezell.
%^$The Buckeyes notched another run in the fifth when but this ended the OSU offense..
%^$Robinson (5-6) took the loss for Ohio State after going 2.1 innings and giving up seven runs. Northwestern’s Kelly Cambell won the game and improved to 4-3 on the season.
%^$Ohio State and Northwestern will finish the three-game series tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Buckeye Field.
