Madison, Wis. – The Ohio State softball team (16-26 overall, 2-13 in Big Ten) lost a doubleheader to Wisconsin, 9-3 and 5-2.
In game one, the Badgers had a 6-0 lead after the fourth inning. The Buckeye bats finally awoke in the top of the fifth. With two outs and Renae Weigel (Jr., Coldwater, Ohio) on third base and Samantha Kimura (Fr., Placentia, Calif.) second, Natalie Kratzer (Sr., Ashland, Ohio) responded with a single to score and Weigel and a error on by Wisconsin centerfielder Jade Gosse enabled Kimura to score.
The Buckeyes added another run in the top of the seventh when Weigel scored on a wild pitch.
Offensively, the Buckeyes were led by Anna Smiths (Fr., Walnut, Calif.) 2-for-3 performance and Kimura finished 2-for-2 with a double.
Inside the circle, OSU starter Jenn Elwell (Fr., Dearborn Heights, Mich.) saw her record fall to 2-2. Wisconsins Jennifer Cummings (10-6) pitched a complete game and took the win.
In game two, Wisconsin kept the momentum going by taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning and never looked back. The Badgers added another run in the third and two more in the fifth.
OSUs only offense came in the bottom of the sixth inning. Cheryl Palaroan (Sr., Reno, Nev.) led off with a single. She advanced to second on Stacy Roths (Fr., Wauseon, Ohio) single to right field. The two advanced a base on Jaime Cheneveys (Sr., Wooster, Ohio) sacrifice bunt. Palaroan reached home on a sacrifice fly by Kimura. Roth followed on a single by Weigel. The Buckeyes eventually lost the game 5-2.
Weigel paced OSU with a 3-for-3 one RBI game.
Inside the circle, Toni Hileman (Jr., Alliance, Ohio) pitched a complete game and saw her record fall to 5-19. UWs Ashely Fauser (11-8) struckout seven to earn the win.
The two schools will play the final game of the three game series tomorrow at 1 p.m.
