COLUMBUS, Ohio – Led by solid performances by Kristi DeVries (Fr., Corona, Calif./Corona) in the pitching circle and Jenn Link (So., Yorba Linda, Calif./Sonora) at the plate, the Ohio State softball team (42-16 overall, 12- 6 in the Big Ten) defeated Wright State, 3-2, in game one of a doubleheader at Buckeye Field.
DeVries tossed a complete game, striking out six and allowing five hits. Link went 2-for-3 including a triple to open up the bottom of the first inning.
Following Link’s triple, Wendy Allen (Fr., Moreno Valley, Calif./Moreno Valley) drove a sacrifice fly to center field to score Link.
Link led off the third inning with an infield single to first base, leading to another OSU run. Allen followed with a single to third base to move Link to second base. With one out, DeVries doubled to left field to score Link.
Wright State tied the score on a two-run home run over the fence in center field fence by designated player Amber Price.
“We had a solid outing from DeVries,” Linda Kalafatis, OSU head coach, said. “She stayed strong after she allowed the home run. We came up with a way to win, manufacturing the winning run.”
The Buckeyes responded with the game-winning run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Kristine Himes (So., Bolivar, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) singled to center field to lead off the half-inning. Himes moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Rogeanna Hottinger (So., Newark, Ohio/Newark) and then to third base on a sacrifice foul to deep right field. A passed ball allowed Himes to come home for the win.
