%^$Minneapolis, Minn. – The Ohio State Buckeyes (20-32 overall, 5-19 in Big Ten) closed out the 1999 season with a thrilling yet heartbreaking, extra-inning, 2-1 loss to the Minnesota Golden Gophers at Bierman Field. The series finale featured another shining performance from OSU starting pitcher Toni Hileman (Jr., Alliance, Ohio).%^$

%^$”Toni has raised her game to another level this final stretch of the season,” head coach Linda Kalafatis said. “She has been doing everything it takes to win for this team. It’s unfortunate that the offense couldn’t get untracked. We had our chance, we just couldnt capitalize.”%^$

%^$Hileman (7-21) took the loss but was near flawless for the afternoon. She went the distance throwing a career high 192 pitches and striking out eight. UMs Steph Klaviter (20-9) also went the distance, striking out eight, to earn the win.%^$

%^$”I felt really good this entire weekend,” Hileman said. “It would have been great to finish the season with a win but we fell short. I give them credit for gutting it out. They finished second in the conference for a reason.” %^$

%^$The Buckeyes only run of the day came in the fourth inning. Anna Smith (Fr., Walnut, Calif.) reached base on an error by Gopher shortstop Shannon Beeler. She scored two batters later off a single by Renae Weigel (Jr., Coldwater, Ohio). %^$

%^$UM sweeps the season series winning games one and two by 1-0 margins. The two schools combined for just five runs in 27 innings of softball. %^$ %^$OSU finishes the season ninth in the Big Ten with its 5-19 conference record.%^$
