COLUMBUS, Ohio – Shiori Fukuda, a redshirt junior on the No. 25 Ohio State women’s tennis team, has been selected Big Ten Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday.
No. 11-ranked Fukuda, from Tokyo, Japan, was recognized after going undefeated at the Michigan Invite last weekend. Highlighting her performance were singles victories over two ranked opponents. Fukuda rallied to top No. 26 Guilia Pairone of Michigan, 7-6 (10), 4-6, 6-2, and also took down Tennessee’s No. 72-ranked Kaitlin Staines, 6-1, 6-1.
Fukuda and her doubles partner, freshman Irina Cantos Siemers, also posted two wins. The duo defeated Tennessee’s Hadley Doyle and Rebeka Mertena (7-5) and Alyvia Jones and Andrea Cerdan of Michigan, 7-6 (1).
This is the first Big Ten weekly honor for Fukuda, who is a two-time First Team All-Big Ten selection and was the 2018 Big Ten Freshman of the Year. She leads the Buckeyes with a 15-4 singles record in 2019-20, with a 7-4 doubles mark.
The Buckeyes will next hit the courts this weekend, as they travel to Stillwater, Okla., for ITA Kickoff Weekend to open dual match play. Ohio State will take on No. 24 Wake Forest at 4 p.m. ET Saturday, with host No. 10 Oklahoma State facing San Diego in the first match of the day. The championship match is set for 3 p.m. ET Sunday, preceded by the consolation match at noon ET. The site winner will earn a spot in the ITA National Team Indoor Championship.
