Columbus, Ohio – Shawn Sangrey, a 6-5 sophomore opposite for 11th-ranked Ohio State (20-7 overall, 11-1 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association), has been named the MIVA Offensive Player of the Week for the second consecutive week and the fourth time this season. Sangrey averaged 6.79 points, 5.68 kills and 1.86 digs per game in the 3-0 (30-26, 30-26, 30-19) win over 15th-ranked Ball State and the 3-1 (30-21, 28-30, 30-23, 30-24) win over St. Francis. The Ball State win earned OSU a share of the MIVA Championship and later the outright title for the fourth consecutive year. Sangrey had a match-high 20 points against Ball State with 17 kills, an ace serve and three total blocks. He had 10 kills in the first game and with Ball State leading, 25-24, he tied the game at 25 with a kill. A Cardinal error made it 26-25 OSU. Sangrey scored the final four points for OSU with a solo block and three consecutive kills to win the game, 30-25. Against St. Francis, he had a match-high 27.5 points with 24 kills, three ace serves and an assist block. In the final conference statistics, Sangrey finishes as the conference leader in points (5.82) and aces (.53) per game and ranks second in kills per game at 4.76.
Ohio State, by winning the conference title, earned the #1 seed in the MIVA Tournament and received a bye in the quarterfinals to be played April 24. The Buckeyes will host a semifinal match at 7 p.m. April 28 facing the winner between IPFW and Ball State.
