COLUMBUS, Ohio – A seven-run third inning propelled the Ohio State softball team to a 10-2 win in five innings over Wright State Wednesday in the first game of a doubleheader at Buckeye Field. Ohio State (33-17, 10-4 Big Ten) improves to 18-2 at home this season and collected 14 hits against the Raiders (6-30, 6-7 Horizon).
Five Buckeyes had multiple-hit games and after its seven-run third inning Ohio State added a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to end the game early. The Buckeyes, who hit a season-high three triples in the game, are now 15-3 in their last 18 games.
Junior Jamee Juarez (La Puente, Calif./Wilson) led OSU offensively, going 3-for-3 with a triple and an RBI.
Junior Nycole Koyano (Walnut, Calif./Walnut) went 2-for-3 with her eighth career triple, which ties her for fourth all-time at Ohio State. Freshman Courtney Pruner (Akron, Ohio/Ellet) went 2-for-2 with her Big Ten-leading fourth triple of the season and drove in two runs for her team-leading eighth multiple-RBI game of the season.
Freshman pitcher Kim Reeder (Salinas, Calif./Notre Dame H.S.) struck out six and scattered six hits to improve to 14-7, which ties her for second on the OSU wins list by a freshman with Jodi Dolan in 1995. Kristi DeVries, now an assistant coach for the Buckeyes, won 16 games as a freshman in 2001. Reeder has now won 10 of her last 12 decisions.
Junior Christina Douglas (Mesa, Ariz./Dobson) went 2-for-3 to up her average to .500 (13-for-26) in her last nine games.
Wright State scored a run in both the first and second inning to take a 2-0 lead thanks to four hits and a walk, but the Raiders left five runners on base to end their first two at bats. The Buckeye left two of their own on base in the second inning, but in the third OSU sent 12 batters to the plate and got triples from Koyano and Pruner and RBI from Vanderink, Carder, senior Stacy Hibma (Buena Park, Calif./Valley Christian) and Koyano, who went 2-for-2 in the inning.
An RBI triple by Juarez in the fourth drove in Pruner and RBI in the fifth came from Douglas on a double and sophomore Stephanie Hill (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) on a grounder to shortstop.
Ohio State and Wright State will meet in game two at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
