Lexi Shillig, a Louisville, Ohio native, graduated Sunday with a major in Strategic Communications. As a member of the Ohio State Cheerleading squad, Lexi has excelled academically and athletically. A four-time Scholar-Athlete, she is well prepared for life beyond Ohio State Athletics.
Growing up, Lexi dedicated herself to gymnastics before transitioning to both her high school’s cheer team and three years of all-star cheer at NEO and American Elite. This preparation earned her a spot on the Ohio State Cheer Team, an opportunity to support an elite athletics department and continue to compete in the sport she loves at a high level.
Lexi took advantage of the Huntington Bucks Go Pro summer internship program during her time at Ohio State. Being placed within the Office of Student Life, Shillig had the opportunity to help plan Buckeye Bus and assist in the Columbus Welcome program that helped introduce thousands of incoming Buckeyes to the local community. She has also taken advantage of numerous other opportunities such as the Wolstein Leadership Academy and the BuckeyeThon Buddy Coordinator program.
The culture of the spirit program has been the foundation of Lexi’s love for the university for the past four years. The family atmosphere and friendships she has created is something she says have made her Ohio State experience special.
Cheering on the Buckeyes has taken Lexi across the country. She has supported Ohio State athletics far and wide in places such as Dallas, New York City, Indianapolis, and Scottsdale. In 2017, Lexi and her teammate, Carter Marsch, qualified for the UCA Partner Stunt Competition at College Nationals in Orlando. Entering this highly competitive division, Carter and Lexi were ranked 7th and finished in the top 10. Lexi was also part of the cheer team’s third place finish at the 2018 UCA College Nationals in Orlando in January. She says the work was worth it, and it was extremely rewarding to be able to put such an amazing final product on the blue mat competing against the best D1A programs in the country.
Lexi has accepted a full-time position as a Sales Associate at Fischer Homes in Columbus, Ohio for next year. The work ethic instilled in her through being a member of the Spirit Program has undoubtedly prepared her to be successful in the next stage of her life.
“People always warn you that these four years will go by fast: they weren’t joking. Graduating this December, I plan to finish strong with my team at the 2019 UCA College National Championship in January and cheer on the football team to a hopeful Rose Bowl win!”
