COLUMBUS, Ohio – Jonathan Zizzo singled to right and drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning as Scarlet handed Gray a 2-1 loss in the opening game of the Scarlet and Gray World Series Monday at Bill Davis Stadium. With the victory, Scarlet took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five intra-squad scrimmage.

With two outs and a runner at second, Zizzo (Fr., Youngstown, Ohio/Sarasota, Fla.) took a 1-0 fastball off Trey Fausnaugh (So., Circleville, Ohio/Westfall) and landed it in front of a charging Steve Caravati (Sr., Dover, Ohio/Dover) to score Chris Macke (Fr., Terre Haute, Ind./Terre Haute North) for the win.

Scarlet out-hit the Gray 8-3 and overcame an error for the win. Eight different players fueled the Scarlet offensive attack as all but one starter had a hit.

The Gray squad got the first hit of the game in the top of the second inning. After a walk to Ronnie Bourquin (So., Canton, Ohio/Canton South), Eric Fryer (Fr., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) delivered a hit through the left side putting runners at first and second for Jamey Moore (So., Senacaville, Ohio/Ohio Valley College), who lined out to second base. Second baseman Tony Kennedy (Fr., Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington South) fired over to first baseman Paul Farinacci (Sr., Westlake Village, Calif./Agoura), who sent the ball back to second to catch Bourquin for the triple play.

Matt Angle (Fr., Whitehall, Ohio/Whitehall-Yearling) gave the Gray a 1-0 lead in the third inning with a single off the glove of Kennedy at second base that rolled into shallow centerfield. The hit allowed Michael Arp (Fr., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) to score from second after he boarded on an error and stole a base.

Gray got its third and final hit of the game in the third inning, but still managed to advance a runner to third base in each of the sixth and seventh innings. Brett Hatcher (Sr., Bellefontaine, Ohio/Bellefontain) came on for starter Mike Madsen (Sr., Canfield, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) to start the sixth and hit a batter, walked another and had two wild pitches, getting Jason Zoeller (So., Verona, Pa./Shady Side Academy) to third with two gone. Hatcher got Fryer to line out to right to get out of the inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, Scarlet tied the game thanks to a two-out single up the middle by designated hitter Cody Caughenbaugh (Jr., Newark, Ohio/Licking Valley) that scored Mike Rabin (Sr., West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East), who had led off the inning with a single to right. Fausnaugh relieved Gray starter Rory Meister (Fr., Mansfield, Ohio/Mansfield Madison) following the equalizing score and got a fly out to end the inning.

Hatcher overcame three wild pitches, two walks and a hit batsman to get the win for the Gray without a hit in two scoreless innings. Fausnaugh got the loss for the Scarlet.

The teams continue the best-of-five intra-squad series at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Bill Davis Stadium.
