Team Scarlet has gotten off to a fast start in all three games of the Scarlet and Gray Series so far and on Tuesday, a seven-run first inning was more than enough in a 7-1 Game 3 victory. Scarlet now leads the series 2-1 with Game 4 set for Friday evening.
The seven-run first inning featured a pair of three-run home runs. The first was an inside-the-park homer by Kade Kern. He drove a ball to center and a diving attempt by Trey Lispey came up just short and the ball skipped to the wall. Kern scurried around the bases and beat the relay home. Later in the inning, Nolan Clegg’s first hit of the series was a big three-run blast to left-center. Clegg finished the night 2-for-2 with the three RBI and a walk. Freshman Tyler Pettorini also had a two-hit night with a run scored.
On the mound, Mitch Milheim started and went two innings, allowing a run on two hits with one strikeout. Wyatt Loncar pitched three perfect innings while Nate Karaffa and TJ Brock each turned in scoreless frames to close out the game.
For Gray, Zach Dezenzo had a single and a double for a two-hit game. Lipsey was 1-for-2 with a walk, stolen base and a run scored. Garrett Peters pitched 3.2 innings in relief, striking out five. Ethan Hammerberg continued his torrid fall, striking out two in his one inning of work.
The final two games of the series will be this weekend. Game 4 is Friday night at 6 p.m. and Game 5 will be Saturday at 3 p.m.
