COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 4 Ohio State men’s gymnastics team opened the 2014 season with the annual Scarlet & Gray Intrasquad Monday afternoon at the Steelwood Athletic Training Facility. The Scarlet team defeated the Gray team, 178.400 – 176.050, earning its second win in five seasons and snapping a two year win streak by the Gray squad. The top two scores on each event counted toward the final results.

“I am satisfied with the team results,” Ohio State head coach Rustam Sharipov said. “I think we’re performing at the level we should be at heading into the break.”

Three of six events were won by freshmen as Jake Dastrup claimed first place on pommel horse with a score of 15.60 and Sean Melton claimed first place on rings and parallel bars with scores of 15.00 and 14.80, respectively.

Of the remaining three events, junior Larry Mayer took first place on vault with a 15.70, junior Alex Nork earned first place on high bar with a 15.70 and sophomore Jake Martin won floor exercise with a 14.90.

Martin also narrowly claimed the all-around title, earning a score of 88.95 to defeat Melton (88.80).

The Scarlet team opened the meet on floor exercise, while the Gray team opened on pommel horse. Redshirt freshman Emeric Quade and junior Andrew Teal paved the way for Scarlet, tying for the top score and rounding out the top three overall scorers on the event. Dastrup led the Gray team on pommel horse, followed by sophomore Jake Martin and redshirt senior Michael Newburger who finished second and third overall, respectively.

Both teams moved to vault and rings for the third and fourth rotations. Melton claimed first place on both events to lead the Scarlet team while the Gray team was led by Martin on rings and Mayer on vault. Overall, Moling and Nork rounded out the top three competitors on rings while Melton and Teal claimed second and third place on vault, respectively.

The teams finished the meet on parallel bars and high bar. Melton once again directed Scarlet as he placed first on parallel bars while Nork placed first on high bar. For Gray, Martin placed first on both events. Overall, Martin and Moling finished second and third on parallel bars and Melton and Martin claimed second and third place on high bar, respectively.

The Buckeyes return to action as hosts of the Alumni Exhibition, the team’s second and final exhibition meet of the season, Saturday, Jan. 11 at 2 p.m. at the Steelwood Athletic Training Facility before beginning the regular season with the Windy City Invitational Saturday, Jan. 18 at 8:30 p.m. ET.
