COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s golf team finished the opening round of the Illini Spring Classic in ninth place with a team score of 312 Saturday, just one stroke back of Penn State and four strokes ahead of 10th-place Minnesota. The tournament is being played on the par 72, 7,018-yard Stone Creek Golf Club in Urbana, Ill.

The Illini Spring Classic was originally slated to last 54 holes, but weather conditions forced tournament officials to shorten the event to 36 holes. Temperatures were in the 40s for much of the day, with steady winds reaching speeds in excess of 20 mph.

Akron will head into the final round in first place at 294, one stroke ahead of host-school Illinois. Jeff Kellen of Illinois and Gareth Blease of Michigan State were the only two golfers under par on the day, shooting 1-under 71 to tie for the individual lead.

The Buckeyes’ effort was lead by Dan Charen, who finished the day tied for eighth place.  The junior posted three bogeys to one birdie on the day to fire a 2-over 74.

Bo Hoag concluded the first round in a tie for 28th place. The senior went bogey-bogey-double bogey in his first three holes, but recovered quickly with two birdies to put up a 5-over 77.

Sophomore Jamie Sindelar shot an 80 to finish in a tie for 47th while junior Alex Redfield fired an 81 to finish tied for 52nd place. Rounding out the lineup for Ohio State was senior Brad Smith in a 60th-place tie after a round of 83.

Some golfers began the second round of play before officials decided to shorten the tournament. Rounds will resume 9 a.m. Sunday with a shotgun start.
