LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The Ohio State softball team won its third game of the season with a 12-3 victory over Ohio in five innings Saturday night at the Hotel Encanto Invitational. This is the third time in the last four seasons that the Buckeyes have started their season with three-consecutive wins.

Tory Haddad had her ninth multi-hit game of her career, including a solo homerun, while Whitney Cooper also hit a three-run blast in the win. In the circle, sophomore Lindsay Bodeker pitched three scoreless innings and struck out nine batters before giving up three runs in the fourth. Megan Miller pitched one inning of relief, striking out one and not allowing a hit.

The Buckeyes capitalized on two errors by the Bobcats in the top of the first for two quick runs scored by Alicia Herron and Dee Dee Hillman. Bodeker took care of business in Ohio State’s defensive half, striking out three of four batters to retain the early lead.

It was the third inning, however, that the Buckeyes took control of the contest by scoring nine runs after completely batting around the order. Cooper homered to left field, scoring Haddad and Katie Simonton as a pinch runner for Sam Marder, who reached base on a single and walk, respectively.

The onslaught continued with the Buckeyes playing small ball and plating six more runs off RBI, including two by Marder off a double in her second at-bat of the inning.

With the Buckeyes carrying an 11-0 lead, Ohio cut the lead to eight in the bottom half of the fourth when Emily Wethington singled up the middle scoring two Bobcat players and Shalene Petrich doubled in Candace Saucedo for their only runs of the game.

Haddad added the run-rule insurance tally in the top of the fifth with the solo homerun to left center for her fifth career homer.

Ohio State wraps up play in New Mexico Sunday morning with games against Colorado State (9 a.m. MT) and New Mexico State (11:30 a.m.).
