Student - Athlete Development Program

Personal Development: Promote healthy behaviors and offer programming and resources that enhance a student-athlete’s individual well-being and decision-making

Peer Educators
The Peer Educators are a group of student-athletes that focus on educating their peers on a variety of health and wellness topics. With collaboration between SASSO and the Student Life Student Wellness Center, the Peer Educators (PEs) are trained to facilitate programs to teams and other student groups on campus regarding safe behaviors surrounding alcohol / drug use, sexual health, and financial wellness.

PEs also meet with students one-on-one to provide resources and guidance regarding the aforementioned topics, plan alcohol free social events, attend the annual APPLE conference, and meet with coaches and sport administrators to review/discuss the student-athlete code of conduct and drug and alcohol policies. This group was awarded the NCAA Choices Grant for 2013-2016 to help increase training and presentation opportunities, as well as plan alcohol free social events each term. Annual events / presentations sponsored by Peer Educators include:

– New/Transfer Student-Athlete Orientation

– Each fall Peer Educators host alcohol education and sexual violence prevention trainings for all incoming and transfer student-athletes.

– Scarlet, Gray & Sober Tailgates

– In partnership with the Student Life Student Wellness Center, Collegiate Recovery Community, and Student Legal Services, Peer Educators provide a substance-free environment for students, faculty/staff, and fans to celebrate prior to a home football game each fall. There is food, a photo booth, cornhole, and additional activities to promote substance-free entertainment.

APPLE Training Institute
Each year 4 student-athlete leaders attend the APPLE Training Institute developed and coordinated by the Gordie Center for Substance Abuse Prevention at the University of Virginia. The APPLE Training Institute are the leading national training symposiums dedicated to substance abuse prevention and health promotion for student-athletes and athletics department administrators. The goal of the APPLE Training Institute is to assist colleges in promoting student athlete health and wellness by empowering teams of student- athletes and administrators to create an institution-specific action plan.
