COLUMBUS, Ohio-Zisis Sarikopoulos, a junior center on the Ohio State men’s basketball team, has elected to remain in his native Greece to pursue his basketball career.

Sarikopoulos played one season for Ohio State after transferring from Alabama-Birmingham following the 2007-08 season. He sat out to satisfy NCAA transfer rules at Ohio State during the 2008-09 season.

In 14 appearances in an Ohio State uniform, Sarikopoulos scored 13 points and grabbed 20 rebounds last season.

Thad Matta, head coach of the Buckeyes, said Sarikopoulos will be missed.

“After speaking with Zisis late last night, it was apparent the opportunity he had overseas outweighed the option he had at The Ohio State University,” Matta said. “It was a tough decision for him but we are happy to have had such a great young man in our program for two years and wish him nothing but the best in the next stage of his career.”
