COLUMBUS, Ohio – Sarah Miller and Melanie Shaffer, members of the No. 24 Ohio State women’s gymnastics team, have garnered first team All-Big Ten honors, the conference office announced Tuesday. In addition, Victoria Aepli was named second team All-Big Ten.
Miller, who is a three-time OSU Scholar-Athlete, a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and was named an NACGC/W Scholastic All-American as a freshman, becomes the Buckeyes’ fifth four-time first team All-Big Ten selection in program history. The 2011 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, Miller was named a second team All-American as a sophomore and earned an NACGC/W regular season All-America honor as a junior a season ago. Miller, who has earned 12 Big Ten weekly awards in her career, has notched career highs of 9.975 on floor exercise and 9.950 on balance beam and vault. The senior has won the balance beam title six times this season and vault five times.
Shaffer, who has 11 career all-around victories, is a three-time OSU Scholar-Athlete, two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and was named an NACGC/W Scholastic All-American as a sophomore. The two-time second team All-Big Ten pick posted a career-high 39.400 to win the all-around against Minnesota earlier this season and has five all-around wins in 2014. Shaffer, who finished 14th with a 39.025 in the all-around at NCAA Championships a season ago, has won the floor exercise title four times this season, uneven bars twice and balance beam once.
Aepli, a three-time OSU Scholar-Athlete, two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and two-time NACGC/W Scholastic All-American, has really come on in here senior campaign, tallying a career-best 39.200 in the all-around her last two meets. She has won uneven bars five times and balance beam once in 2014.
The Buckeyes travel to State College, Pa., for the Big Ten Championships at 2 p.m. Saturday.
