Sammy Sasso Knocks Off Top-Ranked Foe in Iowa City

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Three Buckeyes walked off the mat victorious Friday night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, highlighted by Sammy Sasso’s tiebreaker win over the nation’s top-ranked 149-pounder. Kollin Moore and Luke Pletcher were also triumphant for No. 4 Ohio State (7-2, 3-1 B1G) in a 24-10 team setback to No. 1 Iowa (8-0, 5-0 B1G).

Scramblin’ Sammy demonstrated next level defensive effort, thwarting any and all Lugo scoring attempts. Eight minutes was not even to separate the two combatants as the 1-1 stalemate spilled over into a tiebreaker period. Sasso hit the deck first and broke away for an escape. It was then his turn to go for a ride. He lasted much longer than the standard 8-second rodeo ride, hanging in for the full 30 seconds and eliciting the boo birds as the Hawkeye faithful witnessed Lugo’s first loss of the season (13-1).

Moore and Pletcher, both slotted No. 1 nationally in their respective weight classes, were slated to face top-4 challenges. Jacob Warner and Max Murin were kept off the mat, however, sending others into the lion’s den.

It was a rematch three years in the making for Moore. He stood across from Cash Wilcke, just as he had in 2017 as freshmen inside the same building. Moore won both clashes, including an 8-3 decision this time around.

Carter Happel was burdened with the unpleasant experience of going toe-to-toe with Pletcher, falling victim to a 14-5 major decision.

Both Buckeyes co-captains now hold season marks of 19-0.
