COLUMBUS, Ohio – Sam Scales, a 2010 captain of the Ohio State men’s soccer team, was selected in the 2011 Major League Soccer (MLS) Supplemental Draft held Tuesday from the league’s offices in New York. Scales, a four-year letterwinner with the Buckeyes, was taken by Sporting KC, with the 10th overall pick in the three-round draft.

Scales was a four-year contributor at Ohio State, starting all but one game from his sophomore through senior seasons. In 2010, he tallied two goals and four assists to bring his career totals to five goals and 15 assists, a mark that stands seventh all-time in the OSU record books for career assists. As a junior, Scales led the team in points (11) and assists (7).

His selection comes just five days after fellow captains Matt Gold and Konrad Warzycha were taken in the MLS SuperDraft to Toronto FC and Sporting KC, respectively. In addition to Warzycha, Scales will join Roger Espinoza in Kansas City, re-uniting three members of the 2007 Buckeye squad that finished the season as runner-ups to the national championship. A native of Louisville, Ky., Scales is the 13th Buckeye player to be taken in the Major League Soccer draft since 2003. All 13 players were coached by head coach John Bluem.
