RABAT, Morocco – Sade Olatoye and Buckeye alumnae Maggie Barrie have been in Morocco participating in the 2019 African Games. The winner of each event goes automatically through to the World Championships.
Olatoye, who is representing Nigeria, competed in the hammer throw competition on Tuesday and placed third. On Friday, August 30th she competed in the women’s shot put and punched her ticket to the world championships with a first place finish. This past outdoor season she was named Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week (May 1, 2019), the same week she took home three gold medals and broke two school records at the Jesse Owens Classic. Olatoye hadn’t placed lower than 6th in any meet she has competed in during the 2019 outdoor season. Runner-up at the Big Ten Championships in shot put and hammer throw. She took third in shot put and fourth in the hammer throw at the NCAA Championships. Her two top eight finishes allowed her to score a total of 11 points to assist in the women’s top 25 finish.
Maggie Barrie qualified for the second round of the 400m dash on Monday and also competed in the 200m dash and 4x400m relay on Thursday, August 29th representing Sierra Leone. Barrie ended the games with a fifth place finish in the 200m and seventh in the 4x400m.
