COLUMBUS, Ohio Competing against variable wins and not to mention a pretty good California squad, the Ohio State rowing team had a tough final day at the Pac-10 Challenge Presented by Windermere Real Estate Sunday at Redwood Shores in Redwood City, Calif.
After going 3-3 on day one, including a perfect 2-0 record by the Second Varsity Eight, the Buckeyes suffered three setbacks in the Bay Area against California on the final day of competition.
The Scarlet and Gray entered three competition boats at the annual West Coast Event First Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight and First Varsity Four the same three boats that hope to compete at the NCAA championships this year.
The 12th-ranked 1V8 crossed the finish line 15.1 seconds after No. 5 Cal sounded the horn. The Buckeye crew of Claudia Wurzel, Sara Wallace, Ingrid Aasaaren, Katie Flarida, Claudia Herpertz, Susanne Herbrand, Johnna Burns, Ulrike Denker and Erika Benford finished in 6:55.0. The Bears completed the race in 6:39.9.
The Ohio State 2V8 lost its head-to-head battle against Cal by 3.4 seconds. The group of Anniken Ellingsen, Farrah Edwards, Caroline McPherson, Ellen Heister, Erin Shropshire, Tess Prescott, Peta-Leigh Dakyns, Charlott Goldstein and Samantha Getz had an impressive first day of competition, beating UCLA and Stanford by a combined time of 37 seconds. However, on day two, the Scarlet and Gray clocked in in 6:48.4, while the Bears finished in 6:45.0 even.
Cal edged the Ohio State 1V4 by 2.2 seconds. The crew of Jill Mohr, Sara Reardon, Lindsey Titus, Cleonice Renzetti and Kristin DiJosie pulled in at the finish line in 7:38.3, while the Bears clocked in at 7:36.1.
The Buckeyes will travel to the opposite U.S. coast April 4 when they compete in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge in Charlottesville, Va. The Virginia Cavaliers will serve as hosts of the annual contest.
