COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State fencing team returns to competition Saturday in the Elite Invitational Duals hosted by the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. The Buckeyes will compete in five rounds of fencing, set to start at 8 a.m. and continuing through 6 p.m.
THE COMPETITION
Ohio State will meet six different teams in competition, including Penn State, University of Pennsylvania, University of North Carolina, Notre Dame, Northwestern and Yale for the first road competition of the year. All six competitors placed in the Top 20 at the NCAA Championships last March, where Ohio State placed sixth overall. Penn State and Notre Dame are the teams to watch, as they finished second and third, respectively, at NCAAs.
LAST YEAR’S RESULTS
Ohio State hosted the Elite Invitational in French Field house last year and finished with a record of 10-6. The women picked up wins against Penn State, UNC and UPenn, and the men defeated UNC, who will all be in attendance again this weekend. Both squads only recorded losses against other Top 20 teams.
WHO TO WATCH
The Buckeye woman’s sabre squad had an impressive performance at the OSU Duals in September, dropping only one bout after 72 matches.
All three men’s squads kept their loses in the single digits (E: 66-6 | F: 64-8 | S: 67-5).
A handful of talented freshmen are set to make their debuts as Buckeyes this weekend as well.
