COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State rifle team fired a new team record 4648 in a close match at No. 1 West Virginia. Although the Mountaineers secured the victory with a total score of 4657, the Buckeyes defeated WVU in smallbore 2305-2301 en route to a program best score, eclipsing the previous best of 4633 fired last season.
“Another fantastic performance from our team on Saturday,” head coach Ryan Tanoue said. “For us to be able to go into Morgantown and beat the Mountaineers in smallbore and give them a solid challenge overall was thrilling and I am very proud of how our team performed.”
In smallbore Ohio State was led by sophomore Remington Lyman who fired a personal and match high 584. Freshman Deanna Binnie also had a solid day for the Buckeyes with a 581. Senior Amanda Luoma and freshman Chrissy Thomas both fired 570 and junior Greg Hagar rounded out team scoring for the Buckeyes with a 562. Redshirt senior Dan Chapman fired a 565 in his first action of the season and sophomore Alex Kimura (555) also competed as an individual for the Buckeyes.
In air rifle Ohio State was again led by Lyman who fired a personal best 592. Binnie also fired a personal best with a 588. Luoma (584), Thomas (579) and Hagar (562) rounded out team scoring for the Buckeyes. Chapman (577) and Kimura (578) rounded out the individual scores for the Buckeyes.
“We have had individuals post personal bests each of the first three matches of the season and our team score has improved each of those matches, which I know has been extremely satisfying for the team,” Tanoue added. “Our team score of 4648 is a solid step toward qualifying for the NCAA Championships and we are motivated and eager to continue our momentum this weekend at home against Akron.”
