COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s tennis team competed at the USTA Fall Ranked Spotlight Friday through Saturday at the USTA National Campus. The tournament included a 32-player singles main draw and doubles matches.
Highlighting the tournament was Buckeye redshirt junior Shiori Fukuda making it to the singles final.
To begin the tournament, No. 79-ranked Fukuda defeated No. 87-ranked Rebeka Stolmar of UCF 7-5, 6-1 in the round of 32. She then took down No. 120-ranked Rebeka Mertena of Tennessee, rallying for a three-set win (1-6, 6-1, 7-5) in the round of 16. In the quarterfinals, Fukuda beat No. 49-ranked Mia Horvit of USC 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 to advance to the semifinals where she won again against Layne Sleeth of Florida, 3-2, ret.
Fukuda fell in three sets in the final to No. 2-ranked Estela Perez-Somarriba of Miami, the defending NCAA champion, Sunday in the championship match.
