COLUMBUS, Ohio — Sydni Ratliff of the Ohio State women’s tennis team traveled to San Diego, Calif., for the ITA Fall Nationals at the Barnes Tennis Center this week.
The Buckeye sophomore posted a thrilling comeback win in the opening round Wednesday before falling in three sets in the Round of 16 Thursday.
Round of 16 (Thursday, Nov. 3)
Ratliff, who was ranked 51st to start the year, took on No. 3 seed Abigail Forbes of North Carolina, who was No. 15 in the preseason rankings, Thursday.
The Buckeye won the first set, 6-3, as she held for three-all and then broke, part of a four-game run.
In the second, Ratliff took a 3-0 lead, with one break, before Forbes won the next five to lead 5-3. Ratliff held the next game, but Forbes served it out to take the set 6-4 and force a decisive third set.
In the third set, Forbes opened with a break and a hold for a 2-0 lead. The players exchanged games and Ratliff then won back-to-back for a three-all set. Forbes answered with a break of her own to go ahead 4-3 and then held on the no-ad point for a 5-3 lead. The Tar Heel broke in the next game to take the set and match.
Round of 32 (Wednesday, Nov. 2)
Ratliff, ranked 51st to start the year, rallied for a three-set victory over Sarah Hamner of South Carolina, who was ranked second to begin this fall, in the opening round.
Hamner took the first set, 6-0. Ratliff took over from there. The Buckeye freshman broke to go ahead 2-1 and pushed her lead to 4-1. Hamner won the next two games, but Ratliff held for 5-3 and then broke on the no-ad point to win the set, 6-3.
With the third set on-serve at three-all, Ratliff went on a run. She held for 4-3, broke for 5-3 and then served it out for a 6-3 set win to advance.
