Columbus, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s tennis team suffered a 6-1 defeat to Purdue Sunday at the Jesse Owens West Tennis Center in Columbus, Ohio. The Boilermakers raised their record to 4-10 (2-2 Big Ten), while the Buckeyes fell to 6-13 (1-3 Big Ten). A pair of three-set singles matches and a doubles match that were all decided by tie-breakers, all won by Purdue, were the difference.
Ohio State’s Emily DeCamilla (Sr., Sacramento, Calif./Maryland) and Meredith Vincent (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio/Virginia Tech) picked up their first doubles win in conference action this season by downing Brooke Beier and Stephanie Wooten, 8-6, at No. 2. The Buckeyes narrowly missed winning the doubles point, however, when Ohio State’s sophomore duo Sonia Ruzimovsky (Soph., Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Tech) and Kristin Messmer (Soph., Lutherville, Md./McDonogh) was edged by Hala Sufi and Alyssa Rodriquez, 9-8 (7-2), at the No. 3 position.
In singles, action stayed tight, but in the end the Boilermakers prevailed. Ohio State’s Caitlin O’Keefe (Fr., Troy, Mich./Troy) rallied from a 3-2 deficit in the first set of her match with Beier to win, 6-4, 6-0, at the No. 4 position, but the Buckeyes dropped a pair of three-set matches that included tie-breakers to set the final margin.
At No. 5, Messmer lost to Rodriguez, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (2), while Lindsay Bryan (Sr., New Orleans, La./Ursuline Academy) was beaten by Amy Walgenbach, 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2, at the No. 6 spot. Lindsey Adams (Sr., Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) fell to No. 57-ranked Sufi, 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 1 spot in the clinching match.
Bryan saw her eight-match winning streak in Big Ten play snapped. Including the 2004 Big Ten Championship, she had not lost to a conference foe since March 27, 2004, at Michigan State to Spartan Jessica Baron.
The Buckeyes head back out on the road next weekend, traveling to Indiana to face the Hoosiers at 3 p.m. Saturday in Bloomington, Ind. At 11 a.m. Sunday, they face Penn State in State College, Pa.
