COLUMBUS, Ohio A most-impressive collection of divers from Ohio State University’s powerful and proud diving program – past and present – are expected to be in Columbus this weekend to enjoy the USA Diving Winter Nationals and World Cup Team Trials and take part in a number of Buckeye diving reunion events. The Winter Nationals and World Cup Team Trials are taking place at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion Feb. 4-8.

The keynote event for Ohio State’s diving alumni – a dinner and reception at the Varsity “O” Room at Ohio Stadium – will take place Saturday, Feb. 6 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Ohio State diving coach Vince Panzano, an OSU graduate now in his 32nd year as coach, and Ron O’Brien, the legendary former Ohio State and eight-time Olympic coach who the diving well at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion is named for, will be among the speakers at the dinner.

More than 50 Ohio State diving alumni – including Olympic gold medalists Jennifer Chandler Stevenson (1976) and Bob Clotworthy (1956) – and 12 Olympians are expected to attend the dinner. Also planning to attend are Olympic medalists Don Harper, who won silver behind Clotworthy in 1956, and Tom Gompf, a 1964 bronze medalist.

Other Olympians who are scheduled to attend the reunion at this time include Patrick Jeffrey (1988 and 1996), Mike Finneran (1972), Karen LaFace (1992), Tim Moore (1976), David Pichler (1996), Lou Vitucci (1964), Barbara Weinstein McGrath (1980) and Glen Whitten (1956).

Ohio State diving has had just three head coaches: Panzano (1978-79-present), O’Brien (1963-64 to 1974-75), and the great Mike Peppe (1930-31 to 1962-63). These three coaches, all of them Ohio State grads, have combined to coach (men’s and women’s totals combined):

  • 209 All-Americans;
  • 22 Ohio State Hall of Famers;
  • 62 NCAA Champions;
  • 100 Big Ten Conference Champions; and
  • 23 Olympians.
