IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Ohio State women’s soccer team topped Iowa, 3-1, behind a pair of goals from Nichelle Prince Friday night at Iowa Soccer Complex. With the win, the Buckeyes improve to 6-2-2 on the year, 1-1-1 in the Big Ten, while the Hawkeyes drop to 6-4-0, 0-3-0 in conference play.
The Buckeyes had the first chance of the game in the 18th minute when Nicole Miyashiro played a long ball from the right wing and found Nichelle Prince at the center of the box but her header from six yards was straight into the arms of Hannah Clark.
Ohio State then took the lead in the 34th minute when Prince dribbled past a pair of Hawkeye defenders and lofted a left-footed strike from 25 yards off the bottom of the crossbar and past Clark for the 1-0 lead.
However, two minutes later, Rachele Armand found Brooke Backes with a through ball and Backes finished past Ohio State goalkeeper Jillian McVicker inside the left post to knot the game at 1-1.
Ohio State almost took the lead once again in the 38th minute when Prince found Sammy Edwards just outside the top of box but Clark was able to deflect Edwards’ shot from 18 yards over the top of the crossbar to keep it a 1-1 game heading into the half.
Over the first 45 minutes, Ohio State held a 10-5 advantage in shots on goal.
Iowa had a chance in the 66th minute when Alina Magruder slipped in behind the Buckeye defense to have a one-on-one chance against Devon Kerr but her shot narrowly missed wide left as the match stayed scoreless.
Four minutes later, Nya Cason drew a free kick just outside the top of the Iowa box and Nikki Walts converted from 20 yards just inside the top right corner for the 2-1 Buckeye advantage.
Ohio State then added to its lead in the 84th minute when Walts found Prince with her back to goal before the junior forward turned, beat an Iowa defender and finished inside the left post for her second goal of the match and a 3-1 Ohio State lead.
For the game, the Buckeyes held a 20-8 advantage in shots, 10-2 on goal, and held a 3-1 lead in shots.
Ohio State travels to Nebraska at 2:05 p.m. ET Sunday.
